About Brenda Agnew

I am deeply interested in people and facilitating the process of positive change in a person's life. In my practice as a qualified Counsellor and Psychotherapist,  I draw on over twenty years experience as a professional person at a senior level in the private and voluntary sectors. I began my working life as a lawyer and mediator before re-training as a counsellor and psychotherapist. I am personally familiar with the process of change and find this enriches my work with my clients. I find my work deeply fulfilling and satisfying.

Research indicates that it is the quality of the relationship between therapist and client that is the most important factor in successful counselling. My experience supports this view also. I place particular emphasis on developing a strong relationship based on respect, warmth, trust and empathy. My approach is person-centred, which aims to empower the person and facilitate growth, believing that within each person lies the answer. I believe change is possible at any stage in life, no matter how challenging the circumstances in which we find oursleves.

Psychotherapy is often a journey of re-connection to our authentic self. This involves working through significant events and relationships in our lives to understand the unique way our life has shaped us and to bring to the surface the obstacles that lie in the way of our growth. Building self awareness and insight is central to healing, breaking old destructive patterns, leaving us freer to be who we are and make choices that are healthier and more fulfilling for us. The more at ease we are with ourselves, the more we can contribute to other people.
